Oracy Teaching Method
Hei Awhiawhi Tamariki ki te Panui Pukapuka (HPP) - Embracing children with storybook reading
Hei Awhiawhi Tamariki ki te Panui Pukapuka (HPP) is first and foremost an oracy promotion intervention developed in 1999 by experienced Bay of Plenty practitioners (Stock, Atvars and Pinfold) to assist children develop the language competence and confidence required to support successful literacy development.
A purpose designed approach that provides fun opportunities to enrich children's language via share storybooks.
Specifically, HPP aims to improve vocabulary and language concepts and train children to retell stories in sequence.
Increasing children's awareness of rhyme, letters and sounds, assists them to develop the skills that underpin successful literacy instruction.
A homegrown programme with almost 25 years of data proving its efficacy. It's a prime example of a community/school/early learning centre partnership, scaffolding our tamariki for success instead of waiting for them to fail!
